Gerwyn Price flexed his muscles for the first time in this years Premier League to deny Michael van Gerwen consecutive nightly wins.
The Welshman’s impressive quarter and semi-final performances were backed up by a 104 average in the final to claim maximum points in Antwerp and rebound from his first-round exit last week.
The first ever Premier League night in Antwerp got it’s blockbuster opening as the world number one and two went head-to-head. The former, Luke Littler, had failed to pick up any points from Newcastle and made another shaky start going 4-1 down to Luke Humphries.
However, in a game of two halves the World Champion fought back to a last leg decider when both players missed match darts before Littler eventually converted the winning double 15.
With the exception of the second quarterfinal which was a pretty comprehensive win for Michael van Gerwen against an out of sorts Josh Rock, the first-round matches all delivered dramatic comebacks.
Stephen Bunting led 4-0 against Johnny Clayton before the ferret ignited, winning six legs on the spin which included an almost perfect record on the doubles, taking six out of seven chances at the outer ring.
Finally, Gerwyn Price was involved in another high-profile last leg decider, this time against Gian van Veen. Price had trailed 4-2 thanks to the Dutchman’s clinical finishing, but once that dropped off Price capitalised to win four of the next five legs and move into the semi-finals.
The semi-finals kicked off with Littler against current league leader van Gerwen. The Green Machine has been mighty impressive in the early stages of 2026, and he carried that form into his match against the world number one.
In a game that included seven breaks of throw van Gerwen was able to hold his nerve with a ton topping average eventually winning the decisive 10th leg on throw to move into his second final in as many weeks.
Gerwyn Price joined him in that final but not before fellow countryman Johnny Clayton could offer stern resistance. The latter of the two seemed to have the upper hand through most of the match, only having his throw broken once in the seventh leg before responding straight away with a break of his own.
But Price nicked it with an excellent final leg against the darts to set up a final against MVG. That result means out of the last 17 times the two Welshmen have met Price has won 16, a record the Ferret will need to adjust if he is to make real headway in this years Premier League.
All three of Gerwyn Price’s Premier League games this year had been last leg thrillers until this point, but that trend was diminished by an excellent Price performance in the final. The 2023 finalist raced into a two-leg lead before being pegged back by two monster 160 plus checkouts from van Gerwen.
That, however, is where the resistance ended with Price winning four of the next five legs to complete the nightly win and pick up a maximum five points from Belgium.
Those points move Price up to second in the Premier League table just two points behind leader van Gerwen on seven. Clayton has four and van Veen rounds out the top four on three.
The two Lukes, perhaps surprisingly, have only picked up two points from the opening couple of weeks with Josh Rock and Stephen Bunting yet to win a match. But with 14 weeks of action to come there is plenty of time for them to move up into the top four.
